In light of the upcoming International Women’s Day, Paraguay’s Minister of Women, Cynthia Figueredo, emphasized the importance of continued efforts towards equity and justice during a recent ceremony. She highlighted the transformative potential of women in society and called for collaborative action to create a more equal nation.
At the National Photography Contest “Mujeres que Hacen,” Figueredo recognized ten women for their contributions, stating: “I want to invite everyone to continue fighting for equity and justice. May each image exhibited today encourage us to work together, synergizing our efforts to build a Paraguay where respect and equality are the norm. Let us celebrate the power of being women and let us move forward, because together we are unstoppable.”
Figueredo further acknowledged the significant role women play in society, affirming their equal participation alongside men in societal development. Additionally, she referred to this year as a resolute call to action for women, adolescent girls, and girls worldwide.
However, the backdrop to these encouraging messages includes troubling statistics released by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which reported 7,513 domestic violence cases, two confirmed femicides, and 14 attempted femicides in just the first two months of 2025.
Furthermore, separate health data indicated an increase in respiratory illnesses, with 11,410 influenza consultations and 1,363 hospitalizations for severe acute respiratory infections observed, albeit remaining below the alert threshold. The health ministry cautioned the public to wear masks and seek prompt medical attention to mitigate the transmission of viruses such as rhinovirus and SARS-CoV-2.
The remarks of Minister Cynthia Figueredo highlight the critical role of women in shaping a more equitable society in Paraguay.
