Guyana Issues Warnings Against Venezuelan Electoral Support and Treason Charges

Guyana has warned of treason charges against anyone supporting Venezuelan elections in the disputed Essequibo region. The government has appealed to the ICJ to block these elections, asserting its sovereignty. Recent deportations of Venezuelans highlight Guyana’s commitment to national security amid ongoing territorial issues.

The Guyana government acknowledges the presence of Venezuelan “sleepers” within its borders and has warned that anyone supporting Venezuela’s election of officials in the disputed Essequibo region will face treason charges. Home Affairs Minister, Robeson Benn, emphasized that actions will be taken against any individuals appointed as Governor of Essequibo or associated positions who support such actions.

A recent call to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) was made by Guyana requesting that the Court prevent Venezuela from conducting elections that are set to affect the Essequibo region, which is claimed by both countries. Guyana’s Foreign Ministry stated that these elections, scheduled for May 25, would have implications for the sovereignty of Guyana over its territory.

Venezuela, through a controversial referendum, has claimed Guyana’s Essequibo Region and is now planning elections for a Governor and Legislative Council in this territory. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced these elections for what they term “Guayana Esequiba State”, which has already been declared as annexed by Venezuela.

Guyana’s case before the ICJ, initiated in March 2018, seeks to determine the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award concerning the land boundary dispute. The Court has acknowledged its jurisdiction over the matter and intends to deliver a ruling.

In a related recent incident, Guyana deported 75 Venezuelans, including nine children, after they arrived via a wooden boat. The deportees were treated humanely and provided with basic necessities before being returned to their home country with the help of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.

In summary, the Guyana government is proactively addressing the potential for treasonous activities stemming from Venezuelan electoral initiatives in the contentious Essequibo region. By appealing to the ICJ, Guyana seeks to assert its sovereignty and contest Venezuela’s claim over the territory. The deportation of Venezuelans who illegally entered Guyana further emphasizes the government’s commitment to maintaining national security amid ongoing territorial disputes.
